Robert was a long time business owner in a large city much like Tampa. In the past Robert was very successful. He had the largest ads in the phone book, he had the cover position on his local coupon mailer, and things were going really well… Until around 1998???

What Worked 10 Years Ago Doesn’t Work Today

It was barely a downward tick back in 1998 but if you looked at Robert’s past numbers you would see that was the starting point of his businesses profit deflation. That was the year where the Internet really started catching fire in people’s minds.

Rob was able to slide by for a quite a few more years since he had already been established as the market leader. Around 2004 he started noticing some competitors really catching up to him. When Rob got curious about what they were doing he noticed they had websites.

Rob didn’t believe in all the hype about websites. He told his staff that websites were just a fad and he’d been around for a long time to see lots of fads come and go. He said he would just hunker down and buy more of the old tried and true traditional” marketing tools.

What he noticed though was prices had gone up. The salesman said “There are more businesses then ever before so demand is high and the Internet is giving us a squeeze so we had to raise prices but we’ll give you the biggest spot since you have been with us so long.”

2005, 2006, 2007 all go by and Rob’s competitors are now beating him. He’s now lost his market leader position and is realizing that for the first time in years he is starting to struggle.

Even Having a Website Isn’t Enough Anymore

Robert breaks down and says OK WE’RE GETTING A WEBSITE. Little does he know though, that just having a website isn’t enough anymore like it was in 2004. Now people have websites and a blog and some are using this new tool called Myspace.com.

He spends thousands getting the nicest website created with all the bells and whistles, only to find out that no one is coming to it. It sounds funny now but back then Robert thought he just needed to put up a website and people would see it.

Fast forward to 2009 and Robert is lost, confused, and barely keeping his doors open. All the traditional marketing practices that he built his business on are now barely letting him break-even and that’s on a good month.

This is about the time when I found Robert and rescued his business.

The reason why Robert was so successful in the past was because the “conversation” was taking place offline and he was everywhere that the conversation was taking place.

What I mean is 10 years ago people looked to phone books, coupons, and newspapers for the information they wanted. So it made sense to advertise in those mediums. That’s not the case anymore because the eyeballs have left.

When someone wants to buy something nowadays they use Google, read blogs, and ask their friends on Facebook/Twitter. The eyeballs have moved…

We make market leaders and last time I checked that’s not a title that two people can hold. There aren’t two #1 positions in Google and no one goes to two dentist offices at the same time.
